Comium Gambia offers Sinchu Orphanage a helping Hand:
It could be estimated that there are 60,000 orphans out of a population of 1.6 million in The Gambia. The idea of helping the people of The Gambia, particularly children, began to grow in the mind of Sia Jongeneel following a trip in December in 2000. As a result, Sia established Les Amis de Gambie, a non-profit organization in 2002. Since evolution, the organization has initiated a Hospital Support Project, Children’s Education Sponsorship Programs, Community Based Projects and most recently, the construction of The Sinchu Orphanage.
As part of Comium’s Community Engagement Programs, a process of building relationships with local community members who will work side-by-side with Comium as an ongoing partner, in any and every way imaginable, Comium Gambia made a generous donation worth tens of thousands of Dalasis to The Sinchu Orphanage. Opened in January 2009, The Sinchu Orphanage provides residence for 15 children ranging from 5 months-9yrs, however, has a capacity for 40 children.
In his opening remarks, Comium Gambia Managing Director Amer Atwii said “It’s always good to give back to the community that supports you and we take pride in that. This is the first time that we have embarked on this initiative and hopefully in the coming weeks and months, we will embark on similar initiatives to serve as many people in as many areas as possible”.
Sia Jongeneel, The Director General of The Sinchu Orphanage, in turn, expressed appreciation for Comium’s kind gesture and also urged Gambians and other corporate institutions to emulate Comium Gambia.
The Items donated to the Orphanage include daily needy items ranging from Diapers, Baby Milk, Cerelac, Clothing, Rice, Cooking Oil, Sugar, Soap, Toys MP3, Bicycles, Footballs, etc. In addition, Comium Gambia provided Bouncy Castles, Face Painting and games. A Day well spent!
